Inditex
This company’s brands:
Inditex (Industria de Diseño Textil S.A.) is the world’s largest fashion retail group and parent company to brands including Zara, Massimo Dutti, Pull & Bear, Bershka, Stradivarius, Oysho, and Zara Home.
Inditex has built its empire on a fast fashion model that promotes mass production, overconsumption, and environmental waste. Numerous investigations have linked the company to labor exploitation and human rights abuses in its supply chains, including in Brazil, Turkey, and Asia, where workers have reported wage theft, dangerous conditions, and abuse.
Inditex has also been accused of sourcing cotton linked to Uyghur forced labor in China. Reports indicate that Inditex, despite public denials, continued sourcing from Chinese suppliers implicated in state-sponsored labor abuses as late as 2022.
Politically, Inditex has drawn significant criticism for its cultural and financial complicity in Israeli state violence. In 2023, Inditex brand Zara released a Gaza-themed ad campaign that was widely interpreted as aestheticizing Palestinian suffering amid Israeli bombardments. Inditex stood by the campaign and dismissed concerns. This has led to the inclusion of Inditex—and its brands—on the BDS boycott list for normalizing genocide and refusing to cut ties with Israel.
